One hundred years ago, the Nineteenth Amendment prohibited any state from denying the vote “on account of sex.” With the final ratification on August 18, 1920, the franchise essentially doubled. But what kind of a franchise was it? Frederick Douglass promoted women’s suffrage in 1848, claiming that it would increase the “moral power” of the electorate. Did that prophecy come true?
